Next, decide if you want HD or are you content with standard definition. HD is becoming more and more common and as the additional cost for HD televisions is small, it is likely that HD will be the better choice for the future even if you don't want it now.
Now for the fun part of buying: Get to the stores and watch the television that fit your size and feature requirements. Do you like the color? Are the blacks and grays clear? Are the light areas bright without looking washed out? Can you see any jerkiness in fast moving images? When you look at each one, try to see a variety of content that is similar to your favorite programs. Don't be content with looking at wildlife images if you want to watch sports. When you find the television that looks best to you, it is probably the one you want to buy.
There are many technical features that vary from one television to another. Resolution is perhaps one of the more important ones. If you are going for HD, try to get one that has a 1920 x 1080 native resolution. That will display most HD programs without the need to scale the image to suit other resolutions. Be aware that the native resolution is not always the same as the HD signal format. HD signals are broadcast as 1080 line or 720 line and ANY HD television will display ANY of the broadcast formats. Therefore, make sure you are aware of the native resolution of the display. If the salesman can't or won't tell you what it is, just walk away. There are many other stores that will be keen to have your custom.
Many other technical features are of little importance. Contrast, brightness, refresh rate (in Hz), enhanced color displays, using yellow as a fourth color for example, are only of benefit if YOU think it is a better picture. If you prefer the image on a television that does not have some of these features, it's still a good choice for you. Remember that you will be watching it for years to come, so make sure you pick one that you will enjoy watching above everything else.
