well assuming there pet rats not wild ones..the rat has to be confident in the fact that the owner isn't there to harm it. i would suggest talking to it and letting it know your not an enemy. eventually you can pick it up and hopefully it wont be scared of you. make sure you wash your hands before handling, it might be because you smell of food you've handled and rats have a very good nose but poor sight.

∙ 13y agoI've had mice for awhile and I always scoop them up or grab their tails. do not scoop them up if they aren't used to being held or they will bite you. Don't be afraid to hold them by their tails, it doesn't hurt them. But don't hold them upside down too long.
