The fourth edition (the most recent at the time this answer was written) is designed to be played with miniature figurines on a grid in the center of the table, while everything else happens on paper or in your imagination. Prior editions offered the ability to play on a board like that, but it was written and intended to be played out in the imaginations of the players.
