It depends on the type of recorder one has.
If one has a soprano or tenor recorder, one plays low A by pressing down the thumb hole, and the first two finger holes. High A on these recorders is played with the same fingering, but with the thumb hole covered only halfway.
If one has the sopranino, alto, or bass recorder, one plays it by pressing down the thumb hole, and the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth finger holes. High A on these recorders is played using the same fingering, but with the thumb hole covered only halfway.

The recorder with the highest range is called the sopranino. It is smaller than a typical soprano recorder.
the highest note you can play on a soprano recorder is high b. this is a freakishly high note so be careful not to blow into your recorder really hard while playing this note because you'll pop your Eardrums!
