When water is added to selenium dioxide, it forms selenious acid.
Selenious Acid
The hybridization of selenium in selenious acid is sp3. Each oxygen atom forms a single bond with selenium through an sp3 orbital, resulting in tetrahedral geometry around the selenium atom.
Sulfuric acid is not used to prepare carbon dioxide because it does not readily release carbon dioxide gas when it reacts with carbonates or carbon-containing substances. Instead, carbonates react with acids like hydrochloric acid or acetic acid to produce carbon dioxide gas.
- the carbonic acid (dissolved carbon dioxide in water) is not toxic - the carbonic acid (dissolved carbon dioxide in water) is not so corrosive - the carbonic acid (dissolved carbon dioxide in water) has a pleasant taste - the carbonic acid (dissolved carbon dioxide in water) is cheaper - the carbonic acid (dissolved carbon dioxide in water) is very simple to prepare and very accessible
Carbon dioxide (forms carbonic acid) Sulphur dioxide (forms sulphuric acid) Nitrogen dioxide (forms nitric acid)
Sulfur dioxide is an acidic gas that can dissolve in water to form sulfurous acid, which is a weak acid. Therefore, sulfur dioxide is classified as an acid.
reduction
Carbon dioxide create the carbonic acid - H2CO3.
Copper sulphate, carbon dioxide and water. CuCO3+H2SO4=CuSO4+CO2+H2O
Dissolved carbon dioxide in water (carbonic acid) is weak acid.
Separately Carbon dioxide dissolves in rail water to form a very mild solution of carbonic acid. This is a NATURAL process and NOT 'acid rain'. CO2(g) + H2O(l) = H2CO3(aq) However, Sulphur dioxide also dissolved in rainwater to form sulphurous acid. This is NOT a natural process, because the product has a lower pH making it more acidic. Hence 'acid rain'. SO2(g) + H2O(l) = H2SO3(aq) Similarly Nitric Oxide also dissolves in rainwater to form various acids of nitrogen. Again this has a lower pH than natural rainwater, making for acid rain. NO(g) + H2O(l) = H2NO2(aq) ( Nitrous acid). NB Water (rainwater) is a very powerful solvent and will dissolve most solutes. NNB The oxides of the NON-metals dissolve in water to form acids. Carbon, nitrogen and sulphur are elemental non-metals.
Carbon dioxide is called an acid anhydride because it can react with water to form an acid. When carbon dioxide dissolves in water, it forms carbonic acid. The term "anhydride" refers to a compound formed when a water molecule is removed from an acid.
