Gerbils are certainly easier to acquire. Gerbils are available at most local pet stores while Shaw's Jirds are relatively hard to find. You normally have to go to a breeder to find a Shaw's Jird, even though it is better to go to a breeder for gerbils, too. As far as cheaper, they both require the same supplies, so there shouldn't be much variance in the two. The Shaw's Jird is probably more expensive, running for about $20 each and up at most breeders while gerbils are normally $5 and up.
