There are two types of buds on the shoots of a fruit tree. Small round ones, fruit buds, and thin ones, growth buds. Prune the young shoots, the previous years growth back by two thirds and this will allow the fruit buds to develop if you do not the growth buds grow at the expense of fruit.

You should prune citrus trees in February, or March. You should look for weak limbs, and sprouts on the branches and cut those back. You should also remove broken, damaged or crossing branches. Citrus trees do not need much pruning.

You don't try to do it all in one year. You get a huge amount of water shoot type growth in the spring. Then you have to summer prune heavily at a risk of Silverleaf disease. (which ends up killing stone fruit trees in 3 or 4 yrs down the track)

If you want to keep the tree fruiting, look to cut the big wood out way down the branch. Preferably at about belt height but look for small branches that are coming off it and which has still got prospects of getting it growing green leaves in the spring. This way, it keeps the chances of "die back" way down low.

They say its best to paint the end of cut branch but generally, I only do that if the branch I have cut is wrist size or greater. I use a pruning paste or if I have none, just ordinary car grease or primer paint one would use on the house timbers.

I did 2 very large plum trees this year and chainsawed 2 branches that were the size of my thigh. Tree was lop sided but I pruned back the tall side also to force the new seasons growth to come away from new points all over the tree rather than to depend on just aiming for production for the coming season. There is still a lot of laterals which will send out fruiting wood & flowers.

Give it a go. Its fun watching the tree come back to shape and then also be able to reach the bounty the trees give so gloriously & generously each year.

Burn aas much of the big wood you can because there is a lot of energy & therefore heat in the a fruit tree's hard woods. Even the twigs are great kindling for next year. Or, use a chipper and shred it then feed the mulch and the energy back to the soil around the tree. Its fun using the chippers as well.

I would guess that the best time to prune the tree would be after any chance of frost is over, but before the tree blooms. Otherwise, you risk cutting off the young fruit and will have year of few or no grapefruit. Most citrus matures in November-December.

when can you prune fig tree in southwest louiaians?

The best time to prune not only fig trees but all fruit trees in the south (including Louisiana) is in February. Luckily fig trees are very productive even without a lot of pruning so you can prune just a bit or a lot depending on what you like. The recommendation for pruning however is to prune dead, damaged and diseased limbs as well as tree limbs that are rubbing together. If you stick to that recommendation you will have a high yield of fruit and a healthy tree.
