If you are a new model with little to no experience, you do not need a professional portfolio to submit to agencies. Many state on their websites that professional pictures are not necessary and some even say they will only look at non professional pictures. You are better off having someone take digital, non professional snapshots of you. At minimum you'll need a headshot, full body shot and full body profile shots.

First do a search for modeling agencies in your city/state and visit their websites. They will state most times what type of photos they are looking for. Save your time and money and only submit digital snapshots at this point.

Once you are signed, the agency will arrange your first test shoot for putting together your portfolio.

Should model agencies charge?

By law modeling agencies are not allowed to charge their models anything. The only way an agency is able to make money off of the models it represents is by taking a commission from each paying gig they book for them. Agencies should not charge you directly for putting together a portfolio or for taking modeling classes. If you do end up paying for your portfolio you will be paying the photographer, not the agency. It is totally fair for agencies to take a commission for their part in finding a model paid work but not for any other reason.

Im looking to be a model but most modeling agencies want people with experience o how do I get started?

Contrary to popular belief, many modeling agencies prefer new, inexperienced models because they are easy to train and mold. If you check modeling agency websites they have submission guidelines for both new and experienced models. It is best to look up agencies within a 2 hour's drive of where you live. Go to their websites and see what the instructions are for sending in your pictures and information. Once signed, an agency will train you for free and help you put together your portfolio.

How would you make a modeling resume or portfolio?

To put together a modeling portfolio you will need to set up test shoots with photographers. Once you have done a handful of shoots you will be able to review the photos and choose the best ones to put in your portfolio. Most models' portfolios are printed 8"x10" pictures, which are compiled into a plain, black portfolio case with clear protector sheets. You can find portfolio cases for pictures at any art or office supply store. To create a modeling resume you can use a premade template online or create one yourself in as a Word document. Once you have experience, you'll be able to put together your resume. If you are new/inexperienced, you can list the test shoots you have done with photographers or any training you may have had to put on your resume.

A 42 year old male that deciding to have a modeling career partime. can anyone steer you in the right direction?

You have two options: seek a modeling agent or do freelance. If you want an agent to find you work then you will need to do an online search for agencies that represent male commercial/print or lifestyle models in your city/state. The agency should be located within at least a 2 hour drive. Red flags for an agency that is not legit is if they require any upfront fees for a portfolio or classes/training. A reputable agency will train its models for free and help you set up your first shoot to start your portfolio. If you want to freelance that means you are responsible for putting together your portfolio and finding modeling work. You can search online to find local, professional photographers in your area to network with in order to set up a few test shoots to get images for your portfolio. Once that is put in place you can utilize a number of online sites like Craig's List, Model Mayhem or One Model Place in order to find castings you can submit to.

How should a girl react to her boyfriend starting a modeling career?

There's no "should" here -- you react the way you feel. But a modeling career can be a pretty good deal. The money's decent, and it could lead to an acting career. The down side is that a modeling career can end when BF no longer has "the look" that modeling agencies are looking for. If you are worried about something, talk it over with him. How Much Is It To Be A Model?

If done correctly a person can get started in modeling for under $1,000. To sign with an agency is free so that saves a lot of money, especially if you do not enroll in a modeling school, which costs hundreds to thousands of dollars. The only time any money may come into play is putting together your portfolio. If your agency does not cover the costs or if you are not able to do free test shoots to obtain your images you can expect to pay a professional photographer between $200-600.
