You must be over 35 years old and an Irish citizen. To stand for election you must first get the nomination by getting the support of 20 members of the Irish parliament or senate, or you can get a nomination by getting the support of 4 county councils. An existing president may stand for a second term of 7 years without having to go through the nomination process again. In that case there may not be an election, unless another candidate opposes them.
