To restring an acoustic guitar you have to drop the end if the string in the bridge and replace the pin. Then string it through the tuning post, kink it, and tune it.

It could also be due to a problem with the actual tuner (at the top of the guitar headstock where the string is tightened) With age and stress- the components can become worn. In this case- you we need to repair or most likely replace the malfunctioning part. .
