Use a code reader, scanner or jumper the OBD2 connector terminals. (Connector located under lower edge of dash at steering column). You will need a pin chart and then retreve the codes manually. Best to get the manual of find someone who has access to a shop repair manual.
I clear the check engine light with a Scangauge II. But most ODB-II devices can read and clear the code.

with a odb 2 scanner, you can go to autozone or advance auto parts and they can do it for free. It gives a code then you look the code up and it shows you possiblities for that certain code
ODB-II code series PO7xx is global transmission. PO753 is probably a shift solenoid, but it depends on the specific car.

ODB 2 didn't start until '96 , however the ODB 1 connectors are on the driver side wheel well, its a flash code system or some of the parts stores have ODB 1 readers, ie kragen, pepboys, etc
Trouble code P1744 means: TCC system mechanically stuck in off position
