Use a code reader, scanner or jumper the OBD2 connector terminals. (Connector located under lower edge of dash at steering column). You will need a pin chart and then retreve the codes manually. Best to get the manual of find someone who has access to a shop repair manual.
I clear the check engine light with a Scangauge II. But most ODB-II devices can read and clear the code.

ODB 2 didn't start until '96 , however the ODB 1 connectors are on the driver side wheel well, its a flash code system or some of the parts stores have ODB 1 readers, ie kragen, pepboys, etc
you must use an ODB-2 code reader/ code eraser. You first should read the code or codes and write them down. These tell you what is wrong with the car.
