The exposure is (in theory) correct when the needle on the right side of the viewfinder is in the center of the gap in the black scale. This will give you a good exposure under average lighting conditions.
A good trick is to meter off the palm of your hand, turning it until the meter shows the highest reading and then adjusting the exposure. Then open the exposure 1 f-stop equivalent. This approximates an incident light reading. A gray card can also be used. If you use an 18% card, do not open up the extra stop.
By taking it out!! :L
The metering system is always on on the K-series cameras. If your needle is not moving you need to replace the battery. The lens cover should be left on when the camera is not in use to preserve the battery, although the old style photocell draws very little current as the needle is the only thing it moves. The rest of the system is mechanical.

To use the Asahi Pentax K1000 camera effectively, start by familiarizing yourself with its manual settings and functions. Practice adjusting the aperture, shutter speed, and focus to achieve desired exposure and sharpness. Experiment with different film types and lighting conditions to improve your photography skills. Additionally, consider taking a photography course or seeking online tutorials for further guidance.
You can download the instruction manual from web resources such as http://www.pentaximaging.com/support/manuals-and-literature/. But in short, you need to: # Attach a lens to the camera (a Pentax K Mount lens) # Put in battery (see manual for battery type). Battery is only necessary for light metering. # Put in film (see manual for details) # Select an aperture on the lens # Select a shutter speed on the dial # Wind the lever # Look through the view finder to compose # Press the shutter to expose the picture
The K1000 is a fully manual camera, only. It will be necessary for you to buy a self timer winder. This attaches to the shutter release and is extremely easy to use. Hunt for the wind down self timer on ebay. Costs $ 5 to 8.
$25-40, depending on condition. Most of these have strange anti-glare coatings.
