You better be skilled before attempting this. This is a job for someone who knows what they are doing, not an amateur. I was forced to rebuild mine when the #4 intake valve cracked and dropped into the cylinder. Yes, you will definitely need the repair manual, a comprehensive set of hand tools, a good torque wrench, a cylinder wall hone, an air compressor, and a means to hoist the engine. Also something else to drive- it took me almost three months to complete. But the job is doable- I have over 110K miles on the rebuild and it is still running strong.

Follow the upper radiator hose from the radiator to the engine block. The point where the hose connects to the engine is where the thermostat is typically located.
the one possibility that i can think of is that your thermostat is stuck in the closed position not allowing the water to circulate threw the engine
