There are some breeds of cats which are allergy-friendly.

Allergies to cats are set off when you around cats because cats groom themselves right? Yeah, and in their saliva are special enzymes which create allergies to some people, and some breeds have less enzymes in their saliva. So If you groom your cat regularly, or get a certain breed of cat with less enzymes in its saliva, you should be good.

Additionally, over the counter antihistamines can help stop the allergic reaction before it starts. Claritin, Allegra & Zyrtec are all available at your pharmacy. One must take these daily & regularly as a preventative measure if a cat is in the home. If you are visiting someone with a cat, you can take the antihistamine within a few hours of the visit to ensure it has gone into your system.

If the reaction is bad, Benedryl is really the best solution (liquid works faster should you need it). Benedryl is a short acting antihistamine (usually about 4 hours) and will make you drowsy or even put you to sleep. However, it has pretty good results in combating a mild reaction.

Note: If you have a severe reaction (anaphylaxic shock) you should call 911 immediately.

stop hanging around them !

No, just kidding, but i don't think its possible.

You'd think someone would have come up with a cure for people with allergies by now, when we have all the incredible technology and methods we do today, but you cant stop being allergic until they DO find a cure, which hasn't happened yet. But I'm sure it will someday !

all the best to you and all the people with allergies out there. (:

You could probably just take a bunch of benadryl since my friend does the same thing so she can come to my house, I have many many cats. My mothers friend somewhat over came her allergy to chocolate by doing that so she could eat chocolate...

Well, you most definitely cant permanently get rid of them, but you can avoid them by getting a hypo-allergenic cat. look them up online.

I recommend calling your doctor immediately. Some allergic reactions aren't severe, but, depending on a history of severe cases, calling your nearest doctor is a smart idea. Good luck! :)

My cat seems to have allergies to garlic. Do cats really have allergies?

Garlic is actually toxic to cats, so which is most likely why your cat is having bad reactions to it. As for general allergies, they certainly can. I once had a cat with severe allergies. Cats can develop allergies to many things, although it is becoming increasingly common for a cat to develop allergies to corn and gluten often found in cheaper commercial food brands, and to household chemicals.
