There are a few ways to reduce heat in a house. The sun is the main source of heat therefore heat comes in through the windows. Close the curtains. There is a tinting material that you can get at a hardware store that helps reduce sun rays.

Awnings on the outside of the house above the windows help reduce the amount of heat coming into the house.

Change the color of paint on the out side of the house. Dark colors retain heat and light colors don't.

Insulate the attic and install vents in the roof. Heat is trapped in the attic area and can get extremely hot. Causing the house to stay hot.

Ovens & stoves produce a lot of heat. Reduce your cooking using these appliance's.

Clothes dryers produce a lot of heat. Make sure the exhaust pipe isn't blocked with lint. Make sure the laundry room gets good ventilation.

Install ceiling fans. This helps to circulate the air near the ceiling which would keep it cooler.
