If you ask that question, you don't. You take it to a professional. Charging an A/C is a complicated ART! You need special gauges and thermometers to get the refrigerant level right.
Additionally, FIX THE LEAK FIRST!
The bottles they sell at the parts store that have gauges on them ARE NOT sufficient. The can has only a low side gauge and it does not show the head pressure. You can easily overcharge and blow up your compressor even it the can gauge says its ok.
Spend the $50 for a professional to use the skills he has honed over the years to fix it instead of putting a band aid on a delicate system.

The 2002 Ford Escort zx2 does have an air intake air temperature sensor. The sensor is at the top of the engine on the drivers side.
Manual shows Air cond. Fuse in under the hood fuse box 10A. Actually this is a relay located under the hood, in what is called a fuse block. Look for a black box with white printed diagram on it.

It has no cabin air filter.
On the air intake.
You will find the mass air flow sensor INSIDE the round plastic housing between the engine air filter and the engine air intake tube on your 1998 Ford Escort ( you can see where the wiring connects )
The air filter on a Ford Escort ZX2 is changed by opening the latches on the air handler box and lifting up the top cover. The old filter can then be removed and a new filter put in place.
