You don't want to forget your past as there are so many valuable experiences good or bad that you have learned from that have come to shape your being. I realize you may want to forget one certain incident but instead of thinking you would like to forget it think of the situation and what you may have learned from it - what I mean is some things happen for a reason and others we create on our own, what could you take from the situation and apply or change for your future as to not repeat whatever it is that you would like to forget or maybe a behaviour you learnt maybe useful. Things are only as bad as we let them be and if you try to look at things from different angles - as they say if you get lemons make lemonade.
Most people can remember some of the past. However, people who have suffered trauma may not remember things that happened around painful events. There are also age-related conditions which can result in memory loss.
