01-03 Tribute. Remove the two screws on the inside lip. The tail light pulls straight out towards the rear. What you can't see is that it is held in by 2 snaps on the outboard side.

Should be able to remove the nuts from the inside ( inside trunk ) to remove the lite housing.
there is a plastic cover above the tail light held on by two screws. remove that and simply pull the tail light out.

The tail light covers (the painted bezels) are only held on by 3m Automotive, double-sided tape.
If you open the tail gate and look where the tail gate and side of bed go together where the light is mounted you will see 2 screws take them out and the light will come off then unhook bulbs and remove.
To remove the tail light assembly on a 1997 Mazda Protege remove the two screws that are usually covered by the trunk. After that use some force and push on the inner part of the tail light toward the side of the car. There is a clip in the side of the car that requires some force to undo. Make sure you push in the outward direction to either the driver side on the driver side tail light or the passenger side for the passenger side tail light. After that is removed the tail light should be hanging by wires ready for bulb changes. To change the bulbs just twisth the plastic part.
