The 1997 VW heater hose has swivel nuts on each end of the hose. Turn the swivel nuts to the left to remove the heater hose.

Remove the hoses from the heater core pipes and install a short piece of pipe in both those ends. Install hose clamps and it's bypassed.
you probabally have a vacuum hose disconnected
I remove both heater hoses and use a garden hose to force water through the heater core. I just send water through both ways for a couple of minutes.

Try reverse flushing Disconnect heater hoses and try running a garden hose through in both directions.
Remove the wiring harness to the heater blower fan. Remove the retaining bolts. Remove the fan from the blower. Reverse the process to install the new heater blower fan.

Remove dash all the way to the vehicles metal, remove the arm rest and shifter console. dis connect all eletrical, opps sorry first disconnect the battery. You must then you need to take off the steering wheel and switches for the wipers and turn signal. When that is done you have to take off two 10 mm nuts in the engine bay, these nuts are located right below the heater core exit nozzles and about a foot below that, then you will have to tug on the heater box and they you are . Take out the top two screws aand remove the heater core and replace.
