It is not hard if you have the proper tools. Drain the radiator and remove the upper hose at the engine. Remove the thermostat housing and install the thermostat. Clean the surfaces and install the new thermostat.
Loosen the dash and pull out the complete heater box after you have disconnected the heater hose from the firewall...........

I have a leak coming from what appears to the a heater hose that is against the firewall in my 1996 Pontiac Grand Am. How do I repair this problem? How much is the hose? This hose appears to be coming from the back of the heater. The hose is a drain for the air conditioning.u need a heater core.it is inside the black plastic box.some are easy two change.some very hard.
Drain the coolant, unclamp the old hose, remove the old hose, install the new hose, clamp the new hose in, fill up the coolant.
You know the heater hose on a vehicle needs replacing when it beings to swell and soften. The heater hose runs from the intake manifold to the heater core.
Unfortunately, the easiest way to change the hose (firewall connections) is from under the car. If your Achieva has the dual hose with the black valve across both lines, make sure you go to the dealer for the replacement. It's important for proper operation. Replacing with regular heater hose will cause problems down the road.
