You will need a flat head screw driver and a ratchet. First, unscrew the engine fan cover then unscrew the radiator hose. It will be 5 total, the one on the nose, the right side and the one on the left. You should be able to take that off with your hand but make sure your engine coolant tank is empty. Get an empty container and drain it. Unscrew the two screws under the radiator cap and make sure the twp engine fan cover screws on the bottom are removed. Remove the hose off the bottom left side. Make sure your radiator is drained then pull it out.
Remove the coolant from your 1997 Chevy Malibu radiator. Remove the bottom radiator hose. Run water through the top of the radiator allowing it to run out the bottom.

If it is not on the bottom of the radiator, then just remove the lower radiator hose to drain the system.

the radiator drain plug is on the bottom right facing car from front. you may have to remove the sheild to get at it. my 2000 malibu uses a allen wrench to loosen the drain plug for the radiator. good-day !
Drain enough of the radiator to remove the top radiator hose. Remove the hose, then the pipe that the hose connects to. The bottom end of the pipe houses the thermostat.
