Depends on the type. If there is a nut holding the stem in place, it probably unscrews. If it does not appear to come out then it pulls straight out. It may be held in with a U clip. Take the clip out and it pulls straight out. Depending on the water quality, they can become stuck and you have to take your time getting them out.
