Start with a 1/4" drill bit and drill squarely in the center of the key tumbler opening. Drill down about 1 1/4" to 2" (depending on length of key) then pull drill out, replace bit with 7/16" bit and as you drill down, the tumblers should release and the switch should move to the right, freeing the switch cylinder from the housing as the pin underneath is released. Hope this works for you as it did for me !!!

Remove the steering wheel, remove the screws for the turn signal cancelling cam, then use the proper tool to compress the spring and remove the retainer, this will allow you access to the key cylinder assembly.

Are the door and ignition keys the same on a 1963 Chevrolet impala?

Yes. If you have one with no keys, simply remove the passenger side door lock and take it to your local locksmith who can make a key from the 4 digit code stamped into it, for less than $25. That, or risk destroying the ignition switch trying to get it out of the dash with no key. Door lock easy, dash ignition switch with no key--very difficult.

How do you change a ignition switch in a 1995 ford thunderbird without having the old keys?

This may sound ridiculous... but force the the ignition switch until the detent "breaks" and you can turn the ignition switch without the key. The risk here is that you could possibly break the assembly that the ignition switch inserts into. If you can get the switch to rotate from the lock position one position clockwise, then you can release the switch from underneath the steering column and pull the switch out. The alternative is to have a locksmith get the ignition switch to rotate one position clockwise and then you can remove the switch and replace it with a new one from any auto parts store.
