How do you change an ignition key lock assemble on a 1989 560 SL Mercedes Benz?

The ignition switch on a 1984 Mercedes Benz 300D is replaced by removing the lower steering column cover and disconnecting the wiring harness. The switch can then be unbolted and a new unit put in place.

you insert the key and turn it to the first position,there are two slots on the front of the barrel,which will align with the inside body of the switch,

you then have to insert a 2mm stiff wire into the slots ,about 2 inches,this will depress the locking clips inside the barrel,pull the lock out with the key ,

don't expect to get it right the first time,its fiddley

Remove the retaining ring at the top of your 1981 Mercedes-Benz ignition switch. The ignition switch will slide out. Remove the wiring harness. Reverse the process to install your new ignition switch.

Getting the 560SL apart wasn't too difficult but the steering column will not drop out of the dash. The ign. lock is holding it in. How does the column come out and down far enough to get to the ign. locking collar so the key cylinder can be replaced? Help! Someone please help me out. Thanks... Putnam1

Remove the retaining ring at the top of your Mercedes-Benz ignition switch. The ignition switch will slide out. Remove the wiring harness from the back of the ignition switch.
