i have the same problem. So far I have read, that hot water and salt will work. I've also read white vinegar will work. I'll be trying both solutions today to determine if they work properly.
Use a porcelain or steel instead of the iron or nonstick. The iron adds elements of iron to the food cooked in it. The potatoes turn out good, but the addition of elements is not good. The nonstick pan coating also goes into the food. Research has shown because of the nonstick coating on everything we have this in our bodies.
You can use a magnet to separate the iron nails from the starch. The iron nails will be attracted to the magnet and can be easily picked up. The starch can then be dissolved in water and filtered to remove any remaining debris.

Iron reacts with oxygen to produce iron oxide.
Dont buy nonsitck, use iron or stainless and you should be just fine.
Burnt iron (iron oxide) will weigh more than unburnt iron because the process of burning involves combining iron with oxygen from the air to form iron oxide. The additional weight comes from the oxygen atoms that have bonded with the iron atoms during the burning process.

Burning of iron requires lot of energy. When iron is burnt, if there is not fuel to aid the fire then iron will not burn for long time. But let say in this case iron is being readily burned it will produce moderate amounts of smoke, carbon dioxide, water and some metal oxides.
If you have burnt the iron, meaning there is brown gunk on the underside, this will have to be remove with a light scourer but be careful not to damage the surface, if you need to clean the inside water or steam area there are chemicals made on the market to remove scale buildup, or you could pour some vinegar into the tank and let it drain slowly through the iron. (cold of course)
