ANSWER:Because of the soapiness of the detergent the water and detergent form a less soapy but still soapy mixture of Water & the detergent, in a liquid form.
Laundry detergent doesn't remove Sharpie because Sharpie is water-resistant and most detergents are made and are used in water, so it would only make the ink fade. To get Sharpie out of clothes or something I would suggest rubbing alcohol.

All you need to do is.... get degreasing dish detergent and scrub with warm water on a toothbrush! =-)
The best thing is soak it a while in a detergent and water solution then scrub lightly to remove stuck on dirt. Finally rinse in plain water to remove the detergent. Anything more aggressive could expose the inner zinc core, damaging the coin.
