You can use two sets of pliers, one either side of the opening to pull apart, I usually use on pair on one side and bite the other side.
It's a LOT simpler just to use lip ring pliers. No kidding - they do exist, almost every aircraft technician will have one at least.

Either it isn't screwed on tight enough or if its a captive ball ring, the ring isn't tight enough. So either use pliers to squeeze the ring tighter or screw it on.

The retainig ring has "tabs" that protrude above the groove where the ring fits. You may be able to grasp one or both tabs with needle-nosed pliers and remove the ring.

Remove the ball and pull it out. If it's a closed in ball, take some needlenose pliers, put the end of the pliers in the ring and gently pull the pliers open inside the ring until the ball pops out. Be sure to do this somewhere where the ball doesn't bounce off under something. Edit: If its a ball closure ring, use needlenose pliers.
