Use the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray before removing memory cards etc.
To remove a usb flash drive WHENEVER you want, adjust computer settings as follows:
1.) Right-click the memory card in Windows Explorer
2.) Choose Properties
3.) click the Hardware tab
4.) select the memory card reader
5.) choose Properties
6.) click the Policies tab (you may have to click the 'Change settings' button to make Policies tab appear).
7.) choose "Optimize for quick removal"
8.) done.
