On a UK car it is behind the driver's side front body panel. I had to partly remove the front bumper and the panel to replace it.

Its quite an involved job, but to get the locking mechanism out firstly remove the door panel, then remove the exterior handle which will allow you to remove the locking motor. The links take you to the forum with pictures and more detailed steps.
