Is it an electric weed wacker? If so, here is how I got mine off:
1) Look straight down at the spool cap.
2) You should see a couple of arrows on opposite sides of the cap.
3) Push in the spool and twist until the one of the arrows lines up with the string dispensing hole; you may have to push and twist an inch or two, release, and repeat a few times until it is all lined up.
4) Pull straight up and it should pull straight out with a little effort.
There are bunches of different models, but that is how I FINALLY got mine off.
Most weed eaters have a head that can twist off. You usually have to push in and then twist while pushing. Turning clockwise while pushing is the most typical method.
Push in on the taps on the sides to remove the spool cover.
Remove the spool.
Remove the screw holding the head on.
If you're speaking of the battery covers, there are 2 Phillips screws that come out from underneath.
There is no weedwacker that can really be considered safe for plants and vegetables. It mostly comes down to the user. Purchasing a weedwacker with a smaller head could help improve precision. You could also purchase a weedwacker that allows you to change from string to blades. When weedwacking it is best to set your string length very close to the sides of your weedwackers protective guard. Then, when trimming you can use that gaurd to gauge how close you can get. I have had good success with Stihl weedwackers.
http://www.corobcutters.com I have contacted them and confirmed that their cutters fit the Craftsman molding head cutter. You can also find cutters sold, with or without the molding head, in places like eBay and craigslist. Google helps find them.
