Lift the car, remove the tire, remove the brake shoe/calipers, and remove the brake pads. Next, put in new brake pads, replace the brake shoe/calipers, replace the tire and lower the car to the ground.
The rear brake pads on a 2002 Saturn L100 are much more difficult than "normal" disc brakes. You remove 2 pins and the pads will slide out the open end of the caliper. Retracting the caliper pistons is the difficult part. The caliper is hard lined for the brake fluid instead of having a rubber line. This necessitates the removal of the brake line so it doesn't become kinked or weakened from bending. The caliper can not be removed from the caliper bracket with out loosing brake fluid due to the flawed design. Perhaps there is a special tool that retracts the pistons without removing the caliper but there is a build up of dirt & rust that cannot be cleaned out and must be removed in order to allow the new, thicker, pads to be installed.
Your 1997 Saturn rear brakes are equipped with adjustment screws. Turning the adjustment screw will adjust the brakes. The brakes should adjust themselves automatically every time you back up and hit the brakes.
Open the trunk -remove two hex screws on lens cover(located on inner side) -Bottom bulb harness is for brake light/tail light -Top is for turn signal.
If you call up any Good Rental Store they should be able to help you get a tire (changing thing) it is a thing that crank tires on or off rims.
