I assume it is a t-5 manual? If it is an AOD automatic then it is almost the same. I will separate differences. A T5 is very straight forward. The manual weighs 75 pounds and is very easy to pull and there are 2 methods.

WARNING: THE FOLLOWING STEPS ARE SUGGESTED GUIDELINES AND DO NOT REFLECT ALL STEPS NECESSARY TO REMOVE A TRANSMISSION. THESE STEPS REFLECT 79-93, AND POSSIBLY 94-98. REFER TO THE CORRECT AUTOMOTIVE MANTINANCE MANUAL FOR THE VEHICLE WHICH YOU ARE PERFORMING MAINTINANCE ON.

1.) desconnect the negative terminal from the battery

2.) make sure that your shifter is in neutral

3.) disconnect the sensors. There are two. This is assuming you have a manual. If you have an aod there may be a "transmission overheat" sensor. If you have an aode there will be more connections so be aware of these connections

4.) disconnect the speedometer cable by unbolting the clamp bolt, removing the speed sensor conector, and carefully pull the cable from the transmission, be especially careful as the gears are plastic. If an aod then also remove the cable linkage and the gear shift linkage

If a manual then remove the 4 bolts that the shifter plate is attached to. carefully pull UP on the shifter, shifter should easily come out unless the GASKET IS HOLDING IT. If this is the case use either a dead blow or rubber malet to persuade the gasket to let go by hitting the side of the shifter housing

5.) disconnect the four 13mm 12 point bolts from the driveshaft to the rearend, tilt driveshaft and lightly pull driveshaft away from the transmission.

6.) remove the two nuts from the bottum of the transmission at the mount.

7.) remove either right or left bolt from the transmission attatch crossmember of the vehicle (bar the attatches the trans to the vehicle) simply move the crossmember out of the way unless car is to close the ground. Remove crossmember by disconnecting other side if clearance will be an issue. You may need at car jack at this point to lightly support the transmission in order to relieve possible pressure from the crossmember for ease of bolt removal

8.) If your trans. is a t-5 manual then you may remove the trans. from the bell housing or you may pull the trans with the bell housing from the engine. If you pull bell housing with the trans then you must pull the starter, disconnect the clutch cable from the fork and pull cable through the guide hole at the bell housing. If you leave the bell housing connected the simply remove the four bolts from the trans to bell housing. If your transmission is an aod or aode then your only option is to remove the whole trans and bell housing. Follow these steps as follows.

a.) Remove the bolts that attach your torque converter cover plate. (located at the bottom of the transmission)

b.) rotate the crank until one of your torque converter bolts is in position for remove (located on bottom of trasmission were you removed the cover plate)

C.) remove bolt. repeat step (b.) until all four bolts are removed

9.) now it is time for transmission removal. If you have an automatic then you may have to remove the trans dipstick housing, (have fun).

10.) remove the 5 bell housing bolts at the back of the engine. BEFORE YOU DO THIS, VERIFY THE TRANSMISSION IS SUPPORTED BY A JACK OR SOMEONE THAT CAN SUPPORT 75-159 POUNDS DEPENDING ON TRANSMISSION.

WARNING: MAKE SURE ALL CONNECTIONS ARE DISCONECTED PLEASE. DAMAGE MAY OCCUR IF YOU DO NOT INSPECT CONNECTIONS AND VERIFY THEY ARE FREE FROM THE TRANSMISSION. I MAY HAVE MISSED A STEP, THIS IS ALL FROM MEMORY. DO NOT ASSUME I HAVE COVERED ALL STEPS REQUIRED TO REMOVE A TRANSMISSION. THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENCES IN THE YEARS THAT YOU SPECIFIED.

11.) CAREFULLY pull trans toward the rear end. If it is an auto then it will be a short distance, if a manual then it may be alittle longer.

DISCLAIMER: I DO NOT GUARANTEE THAT THIS IS ALL STEPS REQUIRED TO REMOVE A MAUNUAL OR AUTOMATIC MUSTANG TRANSMISSION, NEITHER DO I TAKE ANY LIABILITY FOR THE CORRECTNESS OF THESE STATEMENTS. BE CAREFUL AS WORKING ON ANY VEHICLE CAN BE DANGEROUS.
