When you say rust spots, does that mean, the rust is not thru the metal, no holes in the body yet. That is what I will answer, if the rust is through the metal I will answer that in the second part. Tools needed Sander air or electric, sand paper, bondo file, bondo, auto body putty, last primer. I am guessing their are spots on the car, apply 220 grit sand paper to your sander and sand down to the metal, then apply a layer of bondo, once that hardens file it smooth if you think you need more bondo apply another coat then take the rough spots out the file saves on sandpaper, then lightly sand the bondo smooth again with 220 grit sandpaper, next you will have some pin holes and some scratches, apply the auto putty, sand that with some 320, or 400 sand paper, once you get the area smooth no scratches or pin holes you can the primer once you start an area it is best to finish that area no matter how large or how small you want to cover that metal up as soon as possible. if you only have time to do one spot then just do one spot, keep the bare metal covered not exposed. Just to let you know this is a time consuming job, and after all your efforts if you live in the north you may get 2 years out of your work before the rust appears again. If when you sand down to the metal and the metal is so thin or you see pin holes it is best to cut out the weak spots and put a patch in. you can glue the patch in, or weld the patch in if you choose, do not bondo over the weak spots when it rains and the bondo gets wet it will fall out. after putting the patch in just do the steps for rust spots.
