First loosen the lug nuts on the side you want to replace the cv axle on. Jack up the car make sure it is secure remove the tire. Remove the spindle nut 32mm socket. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the tie rod end 17mm wrench or socket unhook the tie rod end and move it out of the way. Now that the tie rod is unhooked you can move the hub freely. remove all 6 8mm Allen bolts that secure the cv axle to the tranny. Remove the axle which is easier said than done you have to move it around until it comes out. install in reverse of removal. I don't know the torque specs. I acctually came here looking for them.

Does a 1991 toyota corolla have cv joints or do you have to change the whole axle?

It does have CV joints but, it is best to just swap out the complete axle assembly than to replace only the CV joint. You will spend much time and almost as much money trying to replace the CV joint than to just purchase a reconditioned axle assembly and swap it.
