You must open the hood and disconnect the light assembly from the inside the engine comparment. It will slide out completely. Properly disconnecting the assembly is not obvious.

The 06' has a lock on the side of the headlight. Open hood, look for a lock and unlock icon next to a hex bolt protruding from the side of the headlamp casing toward the front of the lamp. Turn it 1/2 turn to the unlock position. The light assemply will loosen a bit. Push the assembly from behind. It will slide out about an inch. Now look for a silver colored metal silver lever alongside the assemply. Push down about 1.5 iches and ease the headlight assembly entirely out. The entire assembly will come out freely. No other wires or connections (it plugs into a contact at the rear of the headlamp cavity). Remove the bulb(s) that need to be replaced from the rear of the assembly. Be careful to not touch the new halogen bulb with your bare hands (The oils will shorten the life of the bulb).

Reassemble and reverse the process. Be careful to slide the lamp assembly back into the cavity for a snug fit and ensure that electrical plug is firmly connected. Turn the hex box back to locked position. Close hood. All that remains to do at this point is to drive by your local VW dealership and hurl insults.
