I had to pay a dealership $450 to change the thermostat on the 3.4L engine. You have to remove the crossover exhaust manifold. Once that is out of the way, the thermostat itself is easy. Before the manifold is removed, I could only touch one of the two bolts holding the thermostat housing in place, much less get a wrench on it.
Good Luck!
after i read this i had to say something.
I've changed thermostat on a 2002 Buick rendezvous before, it wasn't hard and you don't have to remove the exhaust crossover pipe.

I could not reach the back two bolts on the cross over manifold, so I took off the last piece of the air intake where the throttle position sensor is located. At that point I could get a wrench down there a slowly loosen the lower bolt enough to slide out the thermostat housing, and eventually the thermostat. It took me a couple of hours to complete a task that on any other car would take 30 minutes or so.
