Note: These instructions will be good for a 1997-2003 Chevy Malibu.

This should be done at least once a year, more frequently if the car has been in a dusty environment.

For about 15 bucks you can buy a new air filter at your typical auto parts store. Look up which filter model number in the books provided at the store. There will be two different options for a Malibu air filter (one for the 4 cylinder 2.4L engine and one for the 6 cylinder 3.1L) , make sure you know which engine your car is and get the correct filter. Open the hood and on the right hand side to the engine block there will be a large, square, black box with the huge, corrugated air hose leading out of the box. Get a medium Philips head screw driver and remove 4 screws located on the box corners. Open the top of the box, remove the old filter, and vacuum out any obvious particles still inside the bottom of the box. Toss the new filter in, screw closed, you're done.

So easy, you'll be kicking yourself for ever paying someone else to replace.
