You'll need to remove the head and oil pan, so remove everything necessary to get to them. Once you remove the rod cap from the bottom, you can push the rod and piston assembly out the top.

This scenario doesn't come up much because when a connecting rod goes bad it usually ruins the crankshaft and other parts as well.
