How do you replace door handles on a 1989 XJ6 Jaguar?
This is not a job for the faint hearted. You will need a lot of patience and dextrous fingers. Remove the interior door panels...look into the handle area and spot the 3 small nuts that hold the handles to the door skin..remove and save... locate operating rod clips, release, ease handle out from door, locate loom connectors for lock barrel heater and lock control, they are secured from being trapped by the window in a small clip...... disconnect and remove handle.
Reassembly is reverse of removal plus a little more fiddling about !.

it is held in by plastic clips.remove all these clips. you also have to take cover over buttons for window and door locks. should be one screw holding it in place. i just replaced 2 door handles on my 1995. if you wish to replace door handles your going to have to drill out pop ribbot in door handle.

Sounds like you need to replace the outside door handles. There is a piviot section that wears &/or breaks stopping the outside handle catching the locking mechanism. It is a bit fiddly, but after the first one they become easier. I have had to replace both rear handles on my 84 & 88 town cars - both use the same handle. If it is like most other VWs , there is a Philips screw on the edge of the door where it latches. if this is removed the door handle can be slid out. You didn't mention if there is a key lock in the handle. Use the key in cylinder from the old lock to replace. You may also have to turn the key in order for the slot to mate in the door mechanism.
lRemove the trim panel by taking the door and window handles off then all of the screws you can find then the retainers on the sides and bottom of the door. Most cars are the same. Remove the door furniture, grab handles, internal handles etc. Remove the door card by popping the catches around the edge. Peel back the water proof membrane to gain access inside the door. Undo the two nuts holding the door handle on. Unhook the control rods carefully, noting orientation for replacement.
