Most ignition cylinders are replaced by first removing the steering wheel. Then by using a few specialty tools to get to THE screw itself that releases the ingition. Different makes and models are all different, some harder than others. However, one thing you can do to make things easier on yourself, is go to a local parts department at the dealer of the vehicle in which you are trying to repair. Ask them what specialty tools if any are needed, they are usually pretty helpful and will be able to offer advice toward your particular vehicle. Since an ignition switch is a rather popular item, they should know a bit about them. Also, most of the clerks at your local parts store, like Checker or AutoZone, are usually weekend or backyard mechanics themselves and by flipping through their parts computer should be able to help you out quite a bit as well. Another thing, about those "special" tools, many of the major [non-dealer] stores have those tools, some sell 'em, BUT SOME check 'em out on loan [you have to put up a deposit, BUT IF you return the tool, and intact, the deposit is refunded. If all else fails, and you have no way to get your vehicle to a dealer or auto garage, there are a lot of traveling locksmiths and vandalization restoration companies that will come to you and replace the switch.
