Liftgates are heavy as ......well, they're heavy, and those struts wear out over time. So.....to replace the struts you have to have a 2X4 to prop the lift gate up so that it won't pop you in you head. Then really, if you just follow the directions to remove the clips on the struts it turns out to be a 15 minute job. Go to a reputable parts store and buy the replacements. This is an easy and inexpensive fix.....probably around 20 bucks per strut. Just be careful because if that liftgate falls on your head the medical bill will cost a hell of a lot more than the struts.
Shocks.

A 2000 Grand Marquis does not have struts, it uses a conventional shock/spring type suspension.
There is a difference between the two, however your 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a modern version of the conventional shock system, where the shock and coil spring are separated under the live axle. Good news is anyone with an extension, socket wrench, channel lock pliers and 13 14 and 15 millimeter sockets can change them out in a matter of minutes.
