The inner door panel must be removed and you'll find linkage that's clipped onto the handle. There should be 2 nuts that hold the assm. onto the door. Be careful not to scratch the paint.

Sounds like you need to replace the outside door handles. There is a piviot section that wears &/or breaks stopping the outside handle catching the locking mechanism.
