02 sensor heater curcuit malfunction (bank 1 sensor1)---change front 02 sensor if need be.
Replace the oxygen sensor behind the engine - grey connector.
The Bank 1 Sensor 1 is located on the side of the engine with cylinder #1 before the catalytic converter. The most frequent fix is to replace the sensor. It's apparently not hard to remove and screw in a new sensor, but the location of this one is a bear to get to. That means really difficult. One way to avoid the hassle is to take it to a mechanic who knows how and has the right tools.
There are 2 bank of o2 sensors on Toyota Avalons. Bank1 sensors are on the exhaust piping. Sensor 1 is BEFORE the catalytic converter and is the one you need to look at. Although it is possible it just needs a good cleaning, it is easy to replace. A 22mm metric wrench and some anti-seize will do it.
The heater in the oxygen sensor has failed. Its a good idea to replace BOTH oxygen sensors at the same time. If one has failed the other won't be lasting very long.
