The air filter is connected to the big hose coming from the engine block. Start by removing the hose by loosening the screws with a flat head screw driver on both ends (not completely however). Then you should be able to slide that off of the engine part first then up from the filter itself. Take the top off and remove the wingnut connecting the air filter to the bolt going through the center. To test if its bad shine a light through it. If you cant see the light time to get a new one. PS. I dont know if that is the way the car guys will tell you to test it.
