With vehicle off the ground remove the following, front splash guard, skid plate, both sway bar end links, 2 bolts holding idler arm to the frame, allow idler arm to slide out from frame brackets, all bolts holding left and right axles to differential, both nuts holding axles to the hubs, slide out both axles, unbolt front universal joint on front driveshaft, disconnect electrical plug at front axle actuator, remove breather tube from diff, turn front wheels all the way to the left, remove 2 nuts and washers from pass side diff housing, remove nut and bolt from upper diff mount, support diff with suitable jack (time for a helper to assist you) remove the remaining nut and bolt holding lower diff mount, lower the jack and rotate the diff assembly counterclockwise as it is going down. It doesn't balance on a jack very well so be sure to have a helper.
You have to pretty much disassemble the entire front drive train to replace the differential. It is not a job for an inexperienced backyard mechanic.
Yes, it will fit and mount up just fine. But you will have to make sure the front differential gear ratio matches that of your rear differential. Or what you could do is swap the transmission from the Forester along with the rear differential from the Forester
5 qts with a new filter.
I believe it's called a trans-axle output shaft seal. Could also be the front differential pinion seal.
On the top of rear differential. Some vehicles have one at each front and rear wheel. Some vehicles have one at each front wheel and one on top of rear differential. Depends on the vehicle. The year, make and model info would help.
If you know it is bad, just unbolt the hold down and pull it out.
Use an 80-90wt gear oil
they cannot or the clutches will burn out
It will cost you close to $2,000 to have your front differential replaced on this vehicle. The amount will vary depending upon who does the work for you.Ê
The front differential is an "open" differential. No limited slip components there.
The front differential uses 80w90.
It's an open front differential if it is stock. So is the rear differential
Unless you have a 4x4 or 6x6 unit, there is no front differential.
What is the fluid capacity front differential 2004
The front differential uses 80W90 gear oil.
You must remove the transmission, the front differential is built right in.
You have to remove the entire transmission, and the tranny is in 3 parts. Back of it is the transfer case which houses the center differential (viscus unit), the middle section is the gearbox itself, and the front section (bell housing) is the front differential. All of these sections can be separated and replaced individually. As for specifics on step-by-step instructions, that's beyond the scope of my patience and technical aspirations of WikiAnswers unfortunately.
