start by taking the wheel off then take off the caliper. After take the rotor off. Then there is a nut with a pin through it, take the pin out and undo the nut. Now the hub will come off and one bearing will come out. With a hamer and a punch drive out the other bearing and the grease seal. You should change the races as well(the serface the bearings ride on inside the hub. You will meed it buy wheel bearing grease and pack the new bearings with grease. You can never use enough grease the more the better. Repeat the process in reverse to reinstall. If you have any more Questions E-mail me at reese_koch@hotmail.com
I just did my 1992 Mercury Topaz. First compress the caliper using a sea clamp of large plyers. Then remove the two bolts holding the caliper using (for 92) size 40 star tool. My rotor was rusted, so spray WD40 around the inside seam diameter hole which is just outside the center bolt. After knocking it a few times the rotor came off. It may look like you need to remove the center nuts, BUT YOU DONT. Make sure you clean the new rotor, install it and then the caliper with the new pads. Make sure you compress the caliper all the way before trying to install the new pads. When I tried to compress the second wheel caliper after doing the other side, I had to open the master cylinder cap in order to let pressure off before being able to compress the second caliper wheel.
Is this on the front or rear. If on the front, and you do not have the tools, do not attempt. Its a big job. But, disassemble the brakes, use an air impact on the large nut, use air hammer to drive out the axle, now you have the yoke in front of you. If you do not have the special tools to take out the bearings on the car, then you have to hammer out the tie rod, and the ball joint and take off the strut. You should use a hydraulic press to take out the old and install the new bearing, there is a c clip to take out first. Like I said it is a very big job with no tools. Sometimes better to take the car to someone who has the tools. If on the rear, take off tire, pull drum off, might need to hammer the c--p out of the drum, or slacken the brake adjuster from the back side, the 2 bearings are in the drum. When you un bolt the bearing nut on the drum the outer bearing is right there, take off the seal in the back, and there the inner bearing. If the race looks good on both, then just slip in the new bearings with new wheel bearing grease, and new rear seal. not too much grease, but just enough. Replace the drum, and when you tighten the drum, spin the drum at the same time, not too tight and not too loose. Replace cotter pin. There you go.Hope this helps.
Do yourself a big favor, take the car to a garage. This is a really big job that needs special air tools. Should cost you about $ 100. to $ 120.00 per side. You will understand when you see the job done.
You need special tools for this job. Much easier to take the car to a garage, cost per side should be no more than $ 130.00, that includes labor.
there are no front wheel bearings in front wheel drive cars To correctly answer your question yes, there are front wheel bearings--in fact I am going to have to have mine replaced. In the Mercury Topaz book from Haynes they do not reccommend that you do them yourself. I'm thinking that a special press is used for it. Puglet
Might just be the bearings in the front wheels. Check that. Also, a smart thing to check will be the water pump, if the pump is bad, makes it sound like the front main bearings in the engine are bad. And, hopefully there is nothing wrong with the engine. Good luck.
According to my Chilton's Auto Repair manual : For a 1991 Mercury Topaz ( front wheel drive ) ( 15.9 US. gallons )
Look under the front of the car. Its on the bottom of the engine.
In theory the front wheel bearings require 3 hours to replace, all going well this would be about right but I had serious trouble removing the one of the axel nuts- very tight. The job requires speical pullers to remove the bearings but with them and limited mechanical skill I was able to do it

My front wheel bearings just went in my 04 mountaineer, and we tried to replace them ourselves, but in order to get to the bearings you have to have the truck up on a lift, so unfortunately we had to send it to a mechanic.

the front bearings on the 1989-thru-1997 ford thunderbird/mercury cougar cannot be changed, the whole front hub comes as one piece and have to be replaced as a single unit.
No. You have to replace the bearing. If your local shop is good, takes less than 1 hour labor plus the cost of the bearing.
