Look under the front of the car. Its on the bottom of the engine.
To replace a valve cover gasket on a 1993 Mercury Topaz, you will need basic hand tools such as sockets, wrenches, and a screwdriver. Additionally, it may be helpful to have a torque wrench, gasket scraper, and a new valve cover gasket. It's also a good idea to have some rags or shop towels on hand to clean up any oil spills during the process.
The starter on a 1988 Mercury Topaz is typically located on the bottom side of the engine, near the transmission bell housing. It is attached to the engine block and is accessed from underneath the vehicle. It may be necessary to raise the car and remove some components to reach the starter.
Actually the drain plug is at the back of the oil pan. It's a stupid design because when you remove the plug the oil shoots straight back toward the rear of the car. Mine will shoot as much as a foot depending on how warm the oil is. So, when you change the oil make sure you have a very wide mouthed catch pan to catch the oil or else it will likely miss the opening. Then as the oil gets closer to completely drained the stream will not be shooting as far and you'll have to adjust the position of your catch pan. Onthebottomoftheoilpan.
The oil is coming from the breather tube that comes from the valve cover. There is supposed to be a filter that will block this, but alas, they sometimes do not work to well. One way to stop this, if it is a big problem would be to put a little batch of steel wool in the breather line at the air box side. This might help. Or, replace the original line and filter. As long as there is not too much oil getting in there, the car will still run fine.
Sounds like you are hearing lifter noise. If this engine has solid lifters, then they can be adjusted to remove most of the noise. If it has hydraulic lifters, try pouring one can of Seafoam Cleaner in the crankcase with the oil. Seafoam can be purchased at most auto parts stores. Drive the car for 500 miles and then change the oil & filter. Repeat if necessary. This may or may not help.

The oil drain plug is located on the lower right side of the oil pan. You can easily get to the oil drain plug and oil filter by removing the right front wheel.
10w30 would be a good choice. Any major brand is fine.
