How do you replace the headlight bulb located on a 2003 Chevy Avalanche?

The Avalanche takes a unique type of bulb for the high beam light, known as a 9011 or an HIR 9011. It is very similar to the 9006 low beam bulb next to it, but uses technology developed by GE to generate a lot more light per watt. It's almost as bright as HID lights, but doesn't have the blue glow like HID, and costs a whole lot less. You can find out more info about them at www.finemotoring.com.
The bulbs install the same as 9005 or 9006 bulbs; you rotate them CCW and pull out. The tabs on the base flange are deeper and wider than the 9005 type bulb, but the overall dimensions of the base diameter and filament placement are the same. In fact, you can fit an HIR 9012 low beam bulb in your housings, and get about a 75% increase in light.

Open the hood. First you remove the signal light assembly by depressing a tab on the outboard side and swinging it out to remove. Then you have access to remove the headlight assembly. There are inverted L shaped pins on each side of the assembly. Pivot the pins out of the locked position and pull each one up. Voila. The assembly can then be pulled out for bulb replacement. Reverse the process for installation. No tools required except maybe to unlock the L shaped pins. A key or flat screwdriver can do this. Worked for me. Mar2/08
