The rivet holding the old ball joint in place must first be drilled out. Use a punch and hammer to put a divit in the top of the rivet, drill a small hole then a larger hole through the rivet. Use a hammer and chisel to cut off the head of the rivet and then hammer out the rivet. The new ball joints are installed with small bolts.

Just learned this the hard way today after trying to do it myself. The ball joint will not come out until you remove the brake caliper and rotor. Too time consuming for a do it yourselfer in my opinion...I had the shop down the street replace the ball joint for 1.1 hours labor (about $80).
To replace the upper ball joint on a 1992 Acura Vigor, start by lifting the vehicle and removing the front wheel for access. Disconnect the upper control arm from the steering knuckle and any associated components, then remove the ball joint retaining nut. Use a ball joint separator or a suitable tool to detach the ball joint from the control arm, and replace it with a new one, ensuring proper alignment. Reassemble all components, torque the fasteners to the manufacturer's specifications, and reinstall the wheel.
